Hong Kong 100 (100km course with cumulative elevation gain of over 4,500 meters), title-sponsored by Vibram, is back for a second season. The race takes place on February 18, 2012, with a larger, stronger and more international field of elite runners than the first edition. With up to 750 runners participating, exceeded 300% of the total over the last year.
The event was first officiated at a press conference held at Hong Kong Football Club. Attendees included Steve Brammar and Janet Ng, Co-founders and organizers of Vibram® Hong Kong 100, Ferdarico Furia, Quality Control Direct of Vibram ®China, George Liu, Marketing Manager of Vibram® China, experienced barefoot runner Ng Seow kong and members of the Vibram Hong Kong Team, Marco Lui and Joel LaBelle. Vibram®Hong Kong 100 has designated Daniel Lee Chi Wo, the Doha 2006 Asian Games men's triathlon silver medalist as their honorary guest.
“There is more of a feeling of freedom and self-reliance about racing solo. It's more daunting to participate in a solo ultra-marathon, but you find out more about yourself when you don't have team-mates to support you when you're struggling, or slow you down when you're not.” Janet Ng, co-founders and organizers of Vibram® Hong Kong 100 said.
Aside from the distinguished delegates present at the conference, Hong Kong’s leading triathlete Daniel Lee Chi-Woo also shared experiences in endurance racing and training needs. “It will take great, courage, determination and commitment to participate in a race like Vibram® Hong Kong 100! It will be a great platform for aspiring athletes to test themselves and push the limits of what they can achieve" he said.
Participants of the Vibram® Hong Kong 100 2012 will have to complete the 100km course in 32 hours. They have to be semi self-sufficient and complete the race without a support crew, except at designated checkpoints. The route begins in Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and ends with a descent from Hong Kong’s highest peak, Tai Mo Shan. The course itself has a cumulative elevation gain of over 4,500 meters.
